Doctor Uses Chiropractic Techniques
To Treat More Than Back Pain

Headaches? Sinus problems? Allergies? Believe it or not, there is a chiropractor in Highlands Ranch who treats these problems without the use of drugs.

Dr. Jim McCarty specializes in the treatment of migraine headaches, temporo-mandibular joint or TMJ dysfunction, sinus problems and allergies through the use of massage and realignment of skull bones.

Although this may sound strange, Dr. McCarty is the only doctor in the United States to become an expert at a process known as Central Nervous System Restoration. He applies similar chiropractic techniques used on a person’s spine to manipulate the skull in order to relieve tension on and in the brain.

“The bones in the head never completely fuse together,” McCarty said. “They actually come together like a bridge that has expansion joints in it. What I do is work with my thumbs along the lines where the skull plates come together.”

McCarty said about two percent of medical doctors, chiropractors and osteopaths are trained in cranial work.

Only a small percentage of these people, however, are trained in cranial techniques like Central Nervous System Restoration.

With this technique, McCarty gently moves and realigns a small bone in the center of the sinus cavity which is the key to solving headache and sinus problems.

McCarty described this bone as acting like the gear in the middle of a watch controlling movement and function. This bone is located behind the bridge of the nose even with the temples and is important in the treatment of headaches because it is connected to every other bone in the skull except for the one at the base.

By moving this one bone, McCarty said doctors have discovered they can affect all, parts of the skull, hopefully alleviating headache and sinus problems.

So how does a chiropractor manipulate a bone located in the center of someone’s head?

According to McCarty the process is easier than it sounds. He inserts a small balloon into the person’s nose, and by gently blowing the balloon up and letting the air out, McCarty can maneuver the bone back into place.

Early in his practice, McCarty was not a believer in the CNS Restoration technique, but a few of his patients convinced him to learn about CNS Restoration and become trained in the technique.

After completing the necessary course work, McCarty said he still didn’t think CNS Restoration would work, but he soon found out he was wrong.

He used CNS Restoration on some of his patients with remarkable results.
“I used it on one of my patients with chronic migraine headaches, and, after about a week her headaches were about a third better,” he said. “We treated her again about a month later and the headaches were about two-thirds better. The migraines had stopped, and she was having some regular headaches. By the time we had done the third series on her, the headaches were basically gone.”
He commented that this woman went from having migraines several times a week to only minor headaches occasionally.

Although McCarty said the treatment will work on most types of headaches and sinus problems, he recommends that people who have had sinus surgery not use the CNS Restoration treatment because their sinuses have been altered.
But for most people suffering from pain and discomfort, McCarty may have an answer.
